Government College of Nursing, Thrissur is one of the prime institutions of Nursing Education in Kerala, established in the year 2006 with the twin objective of excellence in Nursing education and manpower development. The college offers BSc Nursing and MSc Nursing programmes. The institution is recognized by Indian Nursing Council, Kerala Nurses and Midwives Council and is affiliated to Kerala University of Health Sciences. The college is recognized as Research Centre of Kerala University of Health Sciences since 2016. During the current academic year (2021- 2022) 16th batch BSc Nursing and 12th batch MSc Nursing students are admitted.

Philosophy
We believe that Nursing is a dynamic and evolving profession which provides goal-oriented, direct services adaptable to the needs of the individual, family and community during health and illness. Nursing is influenced by advances in science and technology and must keep in pace with other disciplines to maintain standards and a high degree of professional competence in health care. Nursing as a profession and a discipline utilizes knowledge derived from arts, sciences (physical, biological and behavioral), humanities and human experience. Nursing science incorporates clinical competence, critical thinking, communication, teaching learning, professionalism, caring and cultural competency. Nurses collaborate with other health disciplines to solve individual and community health needs. Nursing facilitates evidence-based practice, compassionate caring among its practitioners in response to emerging issues in healthcare and new discoveries and technologies in profession. Nursing practice requires personal commitment and life long learning for professional development.
The undergraduate nursing program is broad based education within an academic curricular framework specifically directed to the development of critical thinking skills, competencies appropriate to human and professional values. Blended learning approach comprising of experiential learning, reflective learning, scenario based learning and simulated learning is also inbuilt.The program prepares its graduates to become exemplary citizens by adhering to code of ethics and professional conduct at all times in fulfilling personal, social, spiritual and professional obligations so as to respond to national aspirations. We recognize that the Postgraduate programme prepares nurses to assume leadership positions like specialists, practitioners, consultants, educators, counselors, administrators and researchers in a variety of health care settings. The faculty has the responsibility to be role models and create learning environment that facilitates cultivation of critical thinking, curiosity, creativity and inquiry driven selfdirected learning and attitude of life-long learning in students. Learners and educators interact in a process whereby students gain competencies required to function within their scope of practice
Objectives

Infrastructure
College
The College of Nursing is situated in 5 acres of land earmarked for the institution. The college is sufficiently well endowed in terms of physical infrastructure. The college is functioning in its own, an independent building with a builtup area of 53, 050Sq.fts. The college has an adequate number of class rooms, office rooms and other facilities including well equipped and furnished laboratories (Pre-Clinical Laboratory, Advanced Clinical Nursing Laboratory, Community Health Nursing Laboratory, Maternal and Child Health Nursing Laboratory, Computer Laboratory and Audio- Visual Aids Unit). The office is fully computerized with LAN connection.
Library
The college has a well-established library, which is extensive, well ventilated and spacious with comfortable seating arrangements. There are also internet, Wi-Fi and e-journal facilities available. The Library of Govt. College of Nursing Thrissur is an open- access library spread over an area of 4500 Square feet with a seating capacity for more than 100 students. The collection consists of 5965 books, including reference and complimentary books and subscribes 10 national and 5 international journals every year. The library provides information and access to e-resources and online journals like Clinical Key, along with other reference services. The library is fully automated using open-source integrated library management software “KOHA”. Books are properly shelved subject/department wise as per the DDC Classification Scheme.
Hostel
New modernized hostel for ladies with 54381 Sq.ft plinth area was inaugurated by the Hon’ble. Minister for Health and Devaswom on 26.02.2016. This hostel can accommodate 250 female students. Natural resource conservation measures like solar paneling units, rain water harvesting units, biogas plant, steam cooking units etc. are installed in the hostel. Women friendly toilets with a facility for the safe disposal of sanitary napkins are also provided for the inmates.
Amenities in the College/Campus
a. Transportation: College of Nursing has its own transport system and the students can avail the facilities. Transport facility is extended to the students and the staff for attending the clinical facilities, health camps, educational trips and field visit as a part of their academic programs.
b. Canteen: Our students are utilizing the canteens run by the Indian Coffee House and Kudumbasree in the Medical College campus.
