It was established in order to cater to the need of higher education for the children of this locality and its neighbouring areas. The College was fortunate enough to have the unflinching support of the local people and leaders, tea-garden workers, business magnates and educated elite at the crucial moments of its nascent stage. In this respect, the name of Shri Sreenandan Dhuby deserves special mention. He donated 6 bighas of land where the College is standing at present as gift to the College when the affiliation of the College assumed a big question. Within a short spell of time, the College acquired more plots of land and now the college is the proud owner of 31 bighas of land from all these sources.
The College started its academic journey with very few students in 1965 in a small room at the erstwhile Nehru High School, Pailapool. About one year later, it was shifted to its own building and today, it is in full expedition with more than 1500 students on its rolls. It is not a miracle nor a wonder at all but a pointer to the fact that its entity and the key-role it plays in its domain are really beyond all questions.
At the time of inception, the College was affiliated to Gauhati University. But with the setting up of Assam University, Silchar, today the Degree Course has come under the jurisdiction of Assam University while the Secondary Course still remains under the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council, Guwahati. Presently, the College comes under Government Provincialisation as per the Assam College Employees Provincialisation Act, 2005.
The College is purely an Arts College. It offers Honours in some important subjects of Arts at Degree level, viz., English, Bengali, Manipuri, Hindi, Economics, Political Science and History. The College is going to open Education and Philosophy faculty from the current academic session, 2013-2014. Feasibility of introducing science and commerce streams is also being considered. Career oriented courses like Communicative English, Computer science, remedial courses and TET Coachings under Entry-in Service have already been started.
The College is made up of three Blocks : the Main, Library and Boys’ Common Room. The Main Block consists of Auditorium, the Community Hall, Office Room, Principal’s Room, Vice Principal’s Room, Teachers’ Common Room, Girls’ Common Room, Class Rooms, etc. The Library Block cosnsists of a huge building having more than 15000 (Fifteen) thousand books in its stock along with a spacious Reading Room, a resourceful reference section, etc. The Boys’ Common Room is a permanent AT Building with a good stock of games and sports materials. The College is expanding its infra-structures with the financial aids received from the Government and UGC.
The College is proud of its Museum, the first of its kind amongst the Colleges in the Barak Valley. It has enabled the College to preserve antiquities, natural objects and ethnic artifacts of rare importance. It is heartening to note that a group of members of Jadavpur University, Kolkata came to visit the Museum and study the materials and objects preserved in it. The group appreciated some of the terracotta objects of the Museum.
The College celebrated its Silver Jubilee from 28th to 31st January, 1992 and is going to celebrate the Golden Jubilee in 2015. It is a milestone in the history of the College thereby proving its relentless service to the young citizens which is indeed a realization of the noble objectives cherished by its founding fathers and all those who are the basic sustaining force behind the College.
Indeed, the College has come a long way as symbol of aspirations of the public in general for higher education. Still there are miles to go for the College to achieve its full stature of growth and prosperity and for this, the College authority is looking forward to the spontaneous support and never failing co-operation from all sections of people in the days to come
Nehru College comes under Government Provincialisation in 2005 as per the Assam College Employees Act, 2005 after having been placed under deficit Grants-in-Aid since 01-12-1975. The Higher Secondary Course taught in the college, is duly recognized by Assam Higher Secondary Education Council, Gauhati. The college is now affiliated to Assam University (A Central University), Silchar. The College was duly assessed and accredited by the NAAC, Bangalore in 2004 with Grade 'C++' and the College is now ready for re-accreditation.
