Homeostasis is the core concept in physiology. This post explains its meaning, examples, and why it is essential for MBBS students to understand before studying organ systems.

`Homeostasis refers to the ability of the body to maintain a stable internal environment despite changes in the external environment. This concept is central to all of human physiology.

Important variables maintained by homeostasis include body temperature, blood pressure, blood glucose, pH, and fluid balance. Each variable is controlled by feedback mechanisms.

Most physiological control systems use negative feedback. In negative feedback, a change in a variable triggers responses that bring the value back towards normal. For example, when body temperature rises, sweating and vasodilation help cool the body.

Positive feedback is less common and usually amplifies a change, such as during blood clotting or childbirth.

For MBBS students, remembering that every organ system ultimately helps maintain homeostasis will make complex topics easier to link and revise. Whenever you study a system, ask how it supports the stability of the internal environment.`
